NaCCA and GES Validate Ghana’s Harmonised Sign-Language Curriculum (GhSL

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), has successfully organised a five-day validation workshop for Ghana’s Harmonised Sign-Language Curriculum (GhSL) at the Eastern Premier Hotel in Koforidua.

The GhSL Curriculum marks a major milestone in Ghana’s inclusive education journey. It seeks to harmonise and standardise sign language instruction across all levels of pre-tertiary education, ensuring that deaf learners can access quality teaching and learning experiences through a unified framework.

This groundbreaking initiative is the result of strong collaboration among key partners, including NaCCA, the GES Special Education Division (GES-SpED), the Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD), Transforming Teaching, Education and Learning (T-TEL), and the Mastercard Foundation.

Addressing participants, Madam Helena Mensah, Director of GES-SpED, and Mr. Eric Amoah, Deputy Director-General of NaCCA, reaffirmed the institutions’ shared commitment to advancing inclusive education at the pre-tertiary level. They emphasised that the GhSL Curriculum represents a transformative step toward bridging learning gaps, improving access, and supporting Ghana’s pursuit of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education for All) by 2030.

The workshop brought together curriculum experts, representatives from NaCCA and GES, advocacy organisations, and teachers from schools for the deaf. Together, they reviewed, refined, and validated the draft curriculum, teacher manuals, learner materials, and learning planners ahead of the pilot phase in selected schools.

Participants expressed optimism about the far-reaching impact of the GhSL Curriculum, describing it as a revolutionary step that will enhance teaching quality, empower teachers, and expand learning opportunities for deaf learners nationwide.

With this milestone, Ghana continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to building an inclusive education system where no learner is left behind.
