The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment participated in this year’s National Education Week (NEW). The National Education Week, under the auspices of the Ministry for Education, is an annual event organised to engage relevant stakeholders in reviewing the sector’s performance and strategising for better attainments of the sector’s targets in the ensuing year.
The year’s event took place at the Labadi Beach Hotel from the 29th of September to the 1st of October under the theme – ‘Reimagining education for national transformation’. Panel discussions centred on how the country’s educational system could be re-engineered to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Discussants were quite unanimous in thought that Ghana’s development could leapfrog if the concept of STEM education becomes an integral part of the nation’s educational ecosystem.
NaCCA, on its part, has contributed to enhancing Ghana’s educational fortunes through a revision of the school curricula from an objective-based to a standards-based one. The net impact is that learners would be better equipped with 21st-century skills required for the world of work today. The STEM concept is an ingrained part of the revised school curricula, which emphasizes what learners can do and not content regurgitation.
